Shows potential

I'm genuinely surprised by how well planned out this novel was. It is obvious the author had an idea on how to proceed with his plot, and overall I think he did a very good job.
I don't like reading books in which I detest or feel no sympathy for the main characters. This, thankfully, wasn't one of those books. All of the main characters were likeable, and all were unique and spoke in a genuinely different voice. For instance, if the names of the characters were deleted and all I had were the thoughts, I think would still know in whose voice the author was speaking.
A few things I didn't like were when the King spoke to Oran or Katelyn and explained what was really going on, but we as the reader weren't allowed to know. That felt a bit cheap. There were a few typos, but nothing glaringly bad. I think I've gotten used to typos and they no longer throw me like they used to.
Overall, it was a very enjoyable read, and there were even times I actually laughed out loud at some of the events. In many ways, the book was somewhat reminiscent of the Belgariad, except there wasn't a whiny princess (there was a princess, but she was likable), a jovial, old wizard (there was an old wizard, but he was a hoarder of knowledge and not earthy and fun like Belgarath), and no Polgara or Durnik.

Absorbing fantasy book with great charactar development/interaction

This is mostly your standard fantasy book with a knightly hero, but:
- It has a positive and inspiring but realistically human mood despite the numerous challenges faced by multiple characters
- The overall development/interaction is extremely well done
- The plot is well planned out and extensive, with some nice touches and imagination
- The writing is not amazing, but is very good and much better than typical
- The story isn't rushed and the total number of pages is relatively hefty
- The overall value for the price is superb

In terms of being memorable or an overall theme, there are definitely good potential here....if the author continues to develop, the following books should be easily 5+.
I give the first book 4.5 stars.

It does get into some philosophy of whether god(s) exist and how one should prioritize duty versus love/family/etc and dealing with constant confusion/change..

I thoroughly enjoyed this book. I always find it interesting where people might complain that the hero always wins or that the heroine is to beautiful, the antagonist too evil, etc. Lets face it, the reason that anyone has ever read fiction is for entertainment. This book is entertaining, the good guy wins, gets the girl, kills the bad guy, and becomes the leader of everyone. All the while staying true to his values and not compromising his integrity. "Spoiler" I really liked the way that he appeared to have the princess' best friend and lady in waiting seem weak and helpless but in fact she had done the hardest thing imaginable and stood up to her father and saved the princess. I HATE GREEK TRAGEDIES. Why do you thing all of the latest super-hero movies have done so well? Because ordinary people like to happy endings.

A Christmas to Remember

In the interest of full disclosure, I received an advance reader edition of this book from Forever (Grand Central Publishing) and Net Galley.

This was a anthology of short stories. I liked some stories more than others but I would give the book 3 out of 5 stars overall.

"Dream a Little Dream" by Jill Shalvis
I would rate this short story 4 out of 5 stars. This was one of the better stories in the book. It is part of the Lucky Harbor series but I enjoyed it without having read any of that series. The story is about a Ian and Melissa. Ian is a firefighter who has to rescue Melissa from a burning building. He once dated Melissa and still loves her. They come together in this story. The story was well written and I actually cared about the characters. I plan to read other works by this author.

"Every Year" by Kristen Ashley
I would rate this story 2 out of 5 stars. This was probably my least favorite story in the book. This is part of a series which I have not read so that may account for some of the reasons I failed to connect with the characters. The focus of the short story is Tabby and Shy. They are spending Christmas with family. There were quite a few characters for such a short story. I found that I had a hard time getting feel for the characters and even had a hard time remembering who was who. I did not connect with anybody in the story and the sex scene at the end of the story seemed pointless.

"Silent Night" by Hope Ramsay
I would rate this story 4 out of 5 stars. I liked this story the best out of those included in the book. Maryanne is desperate, out of money, and hopes to re-connect with long lost family with her baby. She arrives at the home she believes her cousin lives at on foot after running out of gas only to find nobody home. She seeks shelter in the barn with her baby, Joshua. Daniel returns home to find them in the barn. Maryanne is at the wrong farm but they decide to spend the evening together. This was a nicely written story that I wished had went on a bit longer. I plan to look into other works by this author.

"Have Yourself a Messy Little Christmas" by Molly Cannon
I would rate this story 3 out of 5 stars. It was an ok story. Dinah is hired to organize the home of Lincoln's parents which he is currently the only resident. Basically they spend time together and fall for each other. I just did not feel any connection to the characters.

"A Family for Christmas" by Marilyn Pappano
I would also rate this story 3 out of 5 stars. A doctor moves to a small town and falls for a local widow with a 6 month old child. I just never got a feel for the romance that was supposed to be happening. I actually thought there was more emotion anytime Juan, the husband who had died, was mentioned.

I thought this book was OK overall. Each of the stories were pretty short if you are looking for a quick read. I am not a huge fan of short stories but occasionally I find one that is wonderful. None of these really were that for me but I did get to read several new authors that I plan to check out in the future.

What a disappointment!

I look forward to Christmas stories every year. This group of stories did not measure up to my expectations. Several of the stories were poorly written with grammatical errors and juvenile dialogue. Each story included an excerpt from a full length novel by the author. It almost seemed as if the purpose of the book was to plug the full length novels.

Holiday Shorts, Very Short with Lengthy Previews of Other Titles

I have a bit of a love/hate relationship with anthologies like this. I adore reading holiday stories during the season, but so many are this type of title - shorts by several similar authors. I enjoy the opportunity to discover new authors who write similar stories to already favorite authors. However, shorts are not my favorite as I don't often feel as connected to the characters and the plots often feel a bit thin or rushed.

Here, it was especially so because each author had a lengthy excerpt of another full-length title included. This meant each story of the anthology was only about a 30 minute read (and I'm no speed reader). For me, it would have served as better advertisement for the authors if those pages were given to the short story to allow me to better connect with the characters and plot and then just give me a listing of each author's other work. A more fulfilling read would sell new to me authors more than a short and an excerpt that was 1/2 or 2/3 the length of the short.

All that said, knowing that I tend to be a tad disappointed with shorts, especially ones that are this short, I will be exploring a few of the new-to-me authors from this collection in the coming year.

If this isn't a classic, I don't know what is

I loved this book. I loved the mood that was set early on, and the suspense that kept building right up to the final chapter. This book was first published in 1938, and it definitely withstands the test of time.

The narrator, a young woman who makes her living as a paid companion, meets and falls in love with a wealthy middle-aged widow named Maxim de Winter. He is both dashing and a bit mysterious. She can't believe her good fortune when he asks her to marry him.

After a honeymoon, the new Mrs. de Winter moves into the beautiful estate called Manderly. She should be on top of the world, but instead feels totally overshadowed by the first Mrs. de Winter, who died in a tragic drowning accident. It seems her husband's first wife was beautiful, vivacious, and loved by everyone. But not all is as it seems. There are several twists and turns in the book that keep the reader turning the pages. I enthusiastically give this book five stars.

This is a classic book that I've had on my "to read" list for a long time. I don't usually read novels in this genre (romance). But this book offers more than romance... it is also a murder mystery. I understand Alfred Hitchcock made this into a movie many years ago but I did not see it. Therefore, i was unaware of the story's plot and how it unfolds. du Maurier does a fine job with this as "mystery".. I especially liked how the protagonist/ narrarator (the second Mrs. DeWinter) is revealed, first as a timid & self-effacing woman who over time finds her stride as the second Mrs. DeWinter and as the mistress of Manderley, the country estate of her husband Maxim deWinter. du Maurier's choice not to give the second Mrs. DeWinter a first name is an intriguing aspect of the story... and underscores the feelings of worthlessness experienced by the second Mrs. deWinter. A main source for these feelings is the perception that the first Mrs. deWinter (Rebecca) excelled in many things (famous beauty, devoted wife & perfect hostess) that the second Mrs. deWinter could not live up to. As the story unfolds, it is clear that Rebecca was not, indeed, as perceived, I gave this 4 stars ... I do like it. But I can't say I loved it. (And there are many other fictions that I have indeed loved.)

No longer sure why this book has been so popular

**SPOILERS** Great gothic atmosphere with, at times, gorgeous prose. The estate (Manderley) was the real star for me, as I couldn't stand the protagonist (she doesn't deserve to be called a heroine). I get that she's young & very naive. But she lives so much in her head that her flights of fancy become her distorted reality, and her spinelessness is truly epic. Having only seen the movie, I was quite shocked to learn that Rebecca's death was not accidental, that Maxim murdered her in a fit of rage. And how does our protagonist react to this revelation? She is overjoyed that Maxim actually loathed Rebecca, and really loves her. She doesn't react to the fact that he's a wife-murderer at all, and actively helps him cover it up. Ugh.
