About the Author
KaraLynne is an amazing mother who never makes mistakes, never gets upset with her children and never ever has a dirty house. Ever. She always has her dishes done and the floors spotless and dinner is always prepared and ready on time. Her kids are always clean, polite, respectful and loving, especially to each other. She never gets irritated with her husband when he doesn't turn his socks right side out for the laundry and they always agree on everything. She delights in nothing else but to serve her family and never wants or needs time for herself. She takes great care to shower every day and put make up on so that she is always beautiful and presentable. She never wears her pajamas all day or for days in a row and she is the epitome of womanhood. Most of all, she has a great sense of humor and loves to write.

Bluebells may be my new favorite flower!

As soon as I saw Bluebells in the Mourning go on sale on Amazon I had to have it (and not just because of the absolutely gorgeous cover)! I had previously read and enjoyed KaraLynne Mackrory's first novel, Falling for Mr. Darcy. I knew that her second dive into the world of Darcy and Elizabeth would turn out to be just as delightful. I was so pleased to be right, I adored Bluebells in the Mourning!

The story begins at Hunsford where Darcy disastrously proposes to Elizabeth in Austen's original. However, Mackrory gives us a decidedly darker (but no less intriguing) twist. Lydia Bennet has died. Darcy, unable to propose to Elizabeth since she has only recently read of Lydia's passing, instead offers Elizabeth and Maria Lucas passage to London with him in his carriage. Needless to say, Elizabeth will be doing a bit of mourning for her sister, which will require many handkerchiefs with `FD' elegantly embroidered. I won't go into too much detail of the plot, you will have to read it yourself to find out, but I want to highlight some of the delightful parts of the novel.

I constantly found myself smiling at Mackrory's clever use of dialogue from the original. Yes, other authors have done this before, but Mackrory masterfully places dialogue in parts you wouldn't expect and spoken by characters you wouldn't expect. For example, while Elizabeth is still in Darcy's carriage shortly after Lydia's death and on her way to London, Darcy, delightfully, contemplates one of Pride and Prejudice's most famous lines. "And with that he fell in love with her all over again as he looked across at her tear-stained face. She was asking after his well-being even in the midst of her grief! You thoughtless cad. `Pardon me, Miss Bennet. I did not mean to disturb you.' He watched as she simply nodded her head and turned her attention once again to the view outside. `Til this moment, I never knew myself" (14).

The parallels Mackrory draws to the original plot of the novel are wonderful. For the most part, the characters in the novel are true to the beloved originals Austen created. However, there are some exceptions. Due to the circumstances of Lydia's death, some characters are altered--and definitely for the better. I truly felt that, had Austen written something similar in her own novel, the characters may have developed in a similar fashion.

In addition to the call-backs to the original, my favorite parts were the moments between Darcy and Elizabeth (shocker, right?). The Darcy and Elizabeth of Bluebells in the Mourning are everything that I hoped they would be. Darcy is still slightly proud in the beginning and Lizzy is prejudiced. Like the original, they are forced to mature and change. The misunderstandings are still there and so is the romance. The concern Darcy shows for Elizabeth and the Bennet family is truly touching. If I didn't love Darcy already, I definitely would now!

Mackrory has truly created one of the better Pride and Prejudice what-ifs out there. If you are looking for an alternate path for Darcy and Lizzy that is beautifully written, true to character, romantic (while still being clean), and so much more, you have found the right place. Stop looking and start reading!

I couldn't put this book down!

Fortunately for me I purchased this on a Friday evening, allowing me to stay up late reading and then finish it the following day when I didn't have to work. I literally couldn't put it down, and I want to commend the author on this sweet tale. I loved her first novel - indeed it ranked in my personal Top 5 of the Darcy/Elizabeth novels. This second book will have to be inserted into the Top 6 I suppose!

The reader is offered a unique twist to the story, with Darcy on the verge of proposing to Elizabeth when he comes upon her just after receiving some very distressing news from home. Darcy's comfort to Elizabeth and his ensuing offer to transport her home seem completely natural, and he is (fortunately) prevented from making the awful marriage proposal in Hunsford. Because of this very unfortunate turn of events, Darcy is able to see that Lizzy would not have accepted him had he proposed at that time, and is able to work at becoming a better man as he strives to make himself worthy of her love.

Things I loved about this book:
* There were some wonderfully romantic scenes - especially the "first kiss" in the field of bluebells. If Elizabeth wasn't still in mourning this would have made the perfect proposal setting, but then our novel would have ended too soon!
* There are no sex scenes, as I DO NOT believe that our two favorite Austen characters would engage in this type of activity prior to marriage. Mackrory is one of those authors that proves you can have a simply wonderful and delicious romance scene without unnecessary vulgarity. (And not that I don't enjoy a good steamy scene, just not with these two characters!)
* We are exposed to some of Mrs. Bennett's vulnerabilities and we get to see wonderful improvements in her as a result of Lydia's death.
* The improvement in Mr. and Mrs. Bennett's relationship is a delight - and I ABSOLUTELY love the turn of events for them found in the prologue. (Very clever!)
* Georgiana's delightfully clever schemes to bring Darcy and Elizabeth together are so very amusing. I enjoyed the way her character was written in this - she was still a bit shy, but certainly not insecure. Definitely a great character.
* Mr. Bingley's independence of Darcy is satisfying to encounter. I love that he was not just so blissfully easy-going, instead showing his ire to Darcy when it became clear that Darcy had misled him. Bingley shows his mettle in this novel, and makes his own decision to come back to Hertfordshire to comfort the family in his time of mourning without informing Darcy. Good for you Bingley!
* I felt that Wickham's actions were believable and not TOO evil, meaning I never can quite buy the idea of him "kidnapping" Elizabeth as he is wont to do in other novels. His fate at the end of the book is what he deserves.
* It is a pleasure to see that out of tragedy good comes in the growth of the entire Bennett family, the Darcy's and Mr. Bingley.

If there is one thing I became frustrated with as I was reading this novel, it was the misunderstanding between Elizabeth and Darcy after they both read the revelations in Lydia's diary. We know they are going to end up together eventually, but you just want to slap them both for their mistaken assumptions about one another. Having said that, however, I love the final outcome, of course. Georgiana, as a strong, confident character, provides the appropriate interference in their misunderstanding. Elizabeth sends the appropriate signal to Darcy to let him know she still cares, and Darcy's impulsive horse ride to Longbourn from London is quite satisfying.

All in all, this was a great read and would recommend this to any JAFF reader! Thank you Mackrory - a job well done!

Bluebells in the Mourning

I had to give this novel 5 stars because of the writing and also because of the enter twining of things that happened were once and then brought back into the plot as to continues.
There is love, disappointment, depression, death, adventure, and joy. Lydia's death came about and then things get worse and then better. I think that Karalynne Mackrory has a great knack for writing a different plot but does wind up in the end to way it is supposed to be to make me happy!
I have read many P & P variations and and do like to read the different variations of where the authors take us on an adventure and this one kept my interest. It is an easy read and I thoroughly enjoyed it. This is my second reading of it and forgot after the first to do my review so here it is.
Thanks for a novel well written

Jessica Sorensen seriously kills me with these books... but I love them.

The titles that Jessica Sorensen comes up with, particularly with her New Adult books, are so simple and straightforward, yet so effective. Case in point, The Destiny of Violet & Luke, which is the first novel in a spin-off series featuring characters first introduced in Sorensen’s Coincidence series. The title is fitting not just because the two protagonists are so similar personality-wise, but because fate keeps throwing them together when each is most in need of the other. This book is filled with moments of angst and heartache, happiness and desire, building to a shocking, though not entirely unexpected twist that had me muttering a string of colorful profanities.

While I enjoyed getting to Luke and, to a lesser extent, Violet, as Callie and Kayden’s roommates, I was thrilled for them to get their own story opposite each other. Outwardly, they appear to be completely different, yet it is revealed that they share a number of similarities, including their respective battles with their inner demons. Despite his manwhore-ish tendencies, I have always been a fan of Luke, whose intimidating façade is a front to keep anyone from getting too close. It might have taken me a bit longer to warm up to Violet, but I was sympathetic to her back story, which explained the motivation behind her extreme and questionable actions throughout the book.

The Destiny of Violet & Luke is one of the most heartbreaking books I’ve ever read, which is saying something, because Jessica Sorensen seems to have found a niche in penning lost and hopeless characters. Violet and Luke have both been exposed to unimaginable horrors since childhood, which forced them to grow up long before nature intended. It’s often taxing reading about characters whose emotions are so raw and intense because I couldn’t help but feel their pain. Going into the book, I knew it wouldn’t be a light, happy read, but I wasn’t expecting the depth of my emotional and physical reaction to their feelings of hopelessness and helplessness.

What I've learned from a number of Jessica Sorensen’s books is that the story will likely end on some type of a cliffhanger, although considering how some of her books have ended, I was admittedly relieved by the finale of The Destiny of Violet & Luke. There’s still much to be resolved, but I’m looking forward to reading the next chapter in their story. Along the way, I've become so emotionally invested in these characters that I would gladly follow the narrative until its very end, because the optimist in me is hoping for a light at the end of a very dark tunnel.

A Traumatic, Dark, Surprising & Sensual Story

My Thoughts:

I am a huge fan of Jessica Sorensen's. The Coincidence of Callie & Kayden, The Redemption of Callie & Kayden, and Breaking Nova were all superb. One thing I have come to learn about Ms. Sorensen's stories is that they often times break my heart, and make me go through a lot of heartache. This is because her characters are always so broken, and damaged by horrible life circumstances. I become attached to her characters, because they leap right of the page for me. They feel so real, and that's the magic of Ms. Sorensen's writing. She knows how to hook her audience, keep their attention, and completely mesmerize them with unforgettable characters, and a plot line that is always filled with crazy twists and turns, along with a dreaded cliffhanger! However, I still continue to read her stories, because they always touch my heart, make me feel a ton of emotion, and stand out from the masses.

The Destiny of Luke and Violet was everything that I had hoped for. I've been dying to get my hands on Luke's story, ever since I was introduced to him in The Coincidence of Callie & Kayden. Right away I became attached to his character. I thought he was a very loyal and amazing friend to Kayden, and Callie as well when he got to know her. I picked up on the weird vibe between him and his mother, and it was obvious that he was dealing with a lot of his own inner conflict as well. I wanted to learn more about his childhood, and his life, because he was such a mysterious character to me. Also, I really wanted him to get his own "happily ever after."

However, until I read this installment of Luke's story, I had absolutely no idea how horrible his life had been growing up, and all the issues that he had to deal with. Then, I really got to know Violet (Callie's dorm roommate,) and let me tell you her issue's were just as horrific as his. These two character's were very traumatized, broken, and emotionally stunted. Violet experienced a horrific event at a young age, and never stopped being plagued by nightmares. She was also bounced around from foster home to foster home her whole life, and suffered ridicule, abuse, and isolation at the hands of those that were entrusted with her care. She didn't have family, friends, or anyone that she could count on. She was an adrenaline junkie who oftentimes put herself in extreme danger so that she could stop feeling the deep emotional pain within her. Luke had a traumatic childhood in which he dealt with a sick and twisted mother, and an absentee father. He didn't do relationships, and his only real friend was Kayden. He had anger issues from the deep rooted trauma of his childhood, and he chose to deal with them through drinking excessive amounts of alcohol, and having meaningless sex with strangers. Things change for Violet and Luke one night when their paths cross, and things are never the same for either of them, ever again.

Wow, this story was very heavy, dark, and traumatic. I really felt like I got to know Violet and Luke on a deep level. These two characters were multilayered and realistic. Ms. Sorensen did a phenomenal job in the portrayal of the horrors that occur in the foster system, as well as those that occur with excessive drug, and alcohol abuse. The love scenes between Violet and Luke were very emotional and sensual. The ending had a horrible twist! Talk about a cliffhanger! Now, I'm needing to get my hands on Violet and Luke's sequel! I want to see how their story ends, and am hoping these two can catch a break, and get the happily ever after that they both deserve.

We met Luke in The Coincidence of Callie & Kayden and learned more about him in The Redemption of Callie & Kayden. He is broody and obviously troubled, but is also a good support to his friends. We also met Callie's roommate Violet. It was obvious that she is different, stand offish, and a bit on edge. They both have troubled pasts with major family issues and pain. She is now mixed up in dangerous activities and craves the adrenaline rush. She has nightmares stemming from her tragic past. Luke's past continues to haunt him and it is hard to avoid. He tries to forget and cope, but does so in unhealthy ways.

"I think I might have met my match for the Stubbornest Person in the World award. It's an award I've pretty much been winning since I was sixteen when I decided to stop trusting people and doing only what I wanted."

Both them hide their dark thoughts and feelings, but have pasts that have marked them and shut them down. Both are stubborn, aloof, and need control. Both have ways of trying to make the pain go away at least temporarily. These were two seriously closed off, damaged individuals. People always leave her so she is not going to get attached to anyone. He cannot let weakness show or lose control. He does what he wants when he wants to. No one really understands them and they do not usually let anyone see the real person they are underneath.

It was a gradual process of seeing two people slowly break down walls and expose vulnerability. Their confusion and fear made them wary, but at the same time there was tenuous bond of friendship and a small promise of more. They did not want to get attached or need each other, but something kept drawing them closer.

It was heartbreaking, emotional and intense. These two characters keep so much bottled up so when it releases there is no way it could be anything less than explosive. I know I should have expected that maybe this couple would also have two books. But I really did not check the Goodreads list ahead of time. But as it slowly unraveled, I began to clue in that their story would be resolved in this one. There will a book 3.5: The Resolution of Callie and Kayden and book 4: The Probability of Violet and Luke in this series. We got to see a little of Callie and Kayden in the beginning of this one and more with Seth and Greyson. I really like Seth and Greyson and they provided a bit of comic relief and some support.

This book was a slow build and it was not incredibly angsty, it was more the peeling away of layers and learning how the past affected the present. I did not think this one was quite as gutwrenchingly emotional as the first two books even though they both had their shared off issues and ghosts. It was a little harder to get a feel for the characters because they were so emotionally detached for so much of the story, especially Violet. At least with Luke, I had seen him with his friends so I knew he was capable of caring and supporting those that were important to him. Violet was extremely guarded and really did not know how to handle someone truly caring about her. She is the epitomy of a runner. But still I was invested enough that there were times that my heart broke, where I was angry, frustrated, and sad. There were a few sweet times and a little humor, but it was really the gradual chipping away at these two stoic characters to real their inner depths and damaged thoughts and to see the beginning of a connection that will face tremendous challenges.

Like with any Jessica Sorensen books, the characters are broken, deep, and have dark pasts. This plotline in this one was unique due to the events and the secrets swirling under the surface. Through no fault of their own, these two people's lives were irrevocably changed and their whole outlook on life became skewed. They became troubled loners without much to look forward to. But that is what made their bond so powerful...that two such destroyed people could possibly find a little hope. But the more attached they become, the more in danger they are of being broken again. And the past does not always stay buried and when it comes back with a vengeance, will it destroy them or bring them closer?

Jessica surely has mastered the skill of leaving us needing more. My heart and mind is definitely left on edge with them. I am looking forward to the completion of their story in book 4 of this series.

Excellent resource for any and all church leaders!

The 2013 Top 100 eBook from ChurchLeaders is the single best compilation of articles, tips, and tricks for church leaders that I've come across in years. I would recommend this eBook to anyone looking for highly relatable and theologically sound advice for their personal and church ministries.

Valuable Nuggests but Shallow Theology...

I get that people are busy. I like the idea of quick, challenging principles. But I don't like such concision when it comes at the cost of good theology and depth. While there is sage advice in this text it lacks a proper foundation.

Thus, I have some concerns. The first is one of doctrinal consistency; for example, the entry entitled 'Deadly Lies We Believe About the Church' makes a statement about why the Church exists that seems to contradict the claim of the entry directly following, entitled 'The #1 Reason Churches Decline'. I don't mind opposing view points that are well supported with evidence/reasoning(these are not), but the book is not described as a counterpoint or melting pot of ideas. The assumption is that these are from the Evangelical perspective, but that label has long since become too broad to safely assume common theology. Are we supposed to approach this book with a pick and choose mentality? Why should we take the authors' word as wise; simply because many of them are well known? Is this an intentional mixture of viewpoints? Regardless, neither position, from my example, is adequately supported Biblically. And this leads to my second primary concern:

In all of these articles, dozens of which supposedly rely upon Biblical Theology and Doctrine, there is not a single section devoted to the idea of theology, nor is there much theological substance to reveal the authors' rationale behind their advice. Even when Biblical principles a referred too, they are rarely cited (e.g. One writer made a claim about the role of the church, then encouraged us, if we didn't believe him, to reread scripture; but how can he assume that we will come to the same conclusion unless he shows us his reasoning?). I'm concerned that these teachings might be easily billed as Biblical 'truth', when they are much closer to personal perspective based on experience and culture. In other words, these teachings should be approached for what they are; suggestions and ideas from the perspective of other leaders. But they are not necessarily Gospel truth nor are they binding. This sort of pop theologizing tends to be more culturally driven than it does Biblically based. Readers should maintain a critical and cautious eye when applying these principles; verify the wisdom for themselves.

Though some might suggest that a collection of leadership resources and practices is too narrow a topic to include much Theology (after all, who has the time for it?), my rebut is simply; is not theology the framework of belief that guides our ministerial practice? A well known leader might provide advice, but why should we be compelled to accept it? If we assume that there is a Biblical mandate, but that mandate is never discussed, only assumed, can we really be certain that our leadership information is built upon Gods Word rather than the trending buzzwords in our culture? Further, there ARE theological claims often asserted in these entries, but rarely detailed or supported (even Biblical citations are sparse) in these snippets. We cannot separate Church Leadership from Theology and we cannot effectively lead on shoddy, assumed or incomplete Theology.

Simply put; theology is not merely abstract thinking, nor is it a waste of time, and it is not meant to be left to those in the ivory towers; every single time we open a Bible to preach, or schedule a church event, we engage in theology, actually we ENACT theology, we live it. Everything we do, as Church leaders, is theological. It is a lie and false dichotomy that theology and practical advice are separate matters.

Let us be deeper, let us be grounded. Let as be assured that our practices and wisdom are more than trends, that they are Inspired by the Spirit of God. Let's not assume that thinking, pondering, praying is any less of a ministry than applying the principles we should be thinking and praying about. Let's not take the easy way and mold our ministry from sound bytes and only.

Let's infuse true, grounded theology into our leadership practices.

More efficient than just perusing the Internet for insights

Has some good content. Good skimming, with occasional pausing to ponder more deeply. Price is right for what it is.

I am disappointed at the mind-numbing frequency of negative tone and related literary tools (e.g., "deadly lies we believe" and "ways to make sure your church doesn't grow" and "easy ways to look at porn" and "bad excuses") in this collection. Such devices might have a place, but I find myself responding with similarly negative tone and snarky attitude -- which is not what any of us are aiming for -- because such tools are so commonly used by the authors in this collection. Again, there is still some truth embedded, so it's not all darkness... but why must this be an issue?

Recommended To All Readers

I've been following Selina's career for over a decade now and I can assure you that she never disappoints. This is a rare YA series that will appeal to readers of all ages... and the beautiful illustrations won't hurt either!

It's true that the plot was somewhat predictable but the action kicked off on page one and will keep you turning pages until the end. The characters are real and relatable and the setting is so vivid that I could see it all happening in my mind's eye. I came to care for Eloryn, Roen, and Will deeply but my heart absolutely broke for Memory once she remembered everything she'd been through in her previous life. They're all deserving of a HEA but I think it's Memory who needs one the most. There are still unanswered questions and an even more dangerous threat to the Kingdom to be unmasked so I'm excited to see what Providence Unveiled brings.

If you haven't read Memory's Wake yet, I'm encouraging you to start there and I promise that you'll be back for Hope's Reign immediately after. It's an unforgettable story that will touch your heart.

Awesome 2nd Book!!!

Wow!! Selina Fenech did another amazing job of continuing the Memory's Wake Trilogy. Hope's Reign is wonderfully written and beautifully illustrated!! Her art is as haunting as her writing!
Memory/Hope struggles to find her place as a Princess and learn about magic and her new world in Avall as some of her stolen memories start to return. Elory struggles to deal with all the responsibilities of being Queen and learning who she can trust. As the girls try to deal with all the pressures they struggle to keep their new relationship strong along with their friendships with Roen and Will.
I can't wait for the conclusion of this story!!!

Fenech Has Done It Again

As it was with the first novel in this series, I read this book in a day and have absolutely nothing but praise for it. The world of Avall never ceases to impress. Hope's Reign delves further into the depths of Memory's past and the intricacies of the mysterious Wizard's counsel. While darker than the first novel, it is filled with touching scenes that will make the reader love the characters even more. I anxiously await the next installment and was thrilled by the recent release of the cover art for the upcoming final novel of this series, Providence Unveiled.
