Good Collection of Quotations and Power Phrases

Quotations are everywhere nowadays. Lots of people post them on Facebook, often in the form of memes with clever pictures. It can also be good, however, to have a large collection of them in one place. This is what Ricky Manna provides us with in this book. I'm a fan of self-help and motivational books, so I always enjoy reading thoughtful and positive quotations and statements. This book is split into two main sections. The first contains quotations, mostly by well known people. Some of them I have seen before, but others were new to me.

The "power phrases" section of the book are not attributed to authors, I suppose because their origin is not known. Some of these are quite clever, even brilliant. A couple that I particularly like are "A conceited person never gets anywhere because he thinks he's already there," and "Hell is truth seen too late."

Quotes and Power Phrases That Matter is good as a reference book to consult whenever you need inspiration or a new perspective on things.

I was very pleased with the book, I would have 5 starred it if it weren't for some minor fixes needed as well as the structure.
Reading the phrases though, I have to agree they truly are power phrases, I have written down a few and posted them in my house. Plan on rereading this a few days.

Chapter three gives information of OzJet’s internal environment from a resource based view that examines the collection of its tangible and intangible resources, as well as its organizational capabilities shaping OzJet’s competitive position. This chapter ends with a short conclusion about OzJet’s strengths and weaknesses.
Finally, it is discussed why OzJet failed and a strategic recommendation is given, about the likelihood of a third airline being successful in the Australian airline industry.

OzJet started its business in November 2005 with the strategy to enter the Australian business traveller market on the Sydney-Melbourne trunk route. It had to compete with three other airlines: Qantas, Jetstar and Virgin Blue. OzJet’s core capability was to provide a top-notch service at a fully flexible economy price. However, the focus on customer service was not able to meet the needs of the targeted market. Business-class travellers were loyal to Qantas, offering a much higher flight frequency and loyalty program for this not so price sensitive market segment. In the end, OzJet had neither the cost structure (using old plains) nor the reputation and financial background to consist against its strong competitors.
As a result, despite the high quality of its services, the airline OzJet couldn't find its niche and made a double digit million $ loss (about 10 million $) after 4 months. It ceased all scheduled operations on 12th March 2006 and now operates as a private charter company.

Excellent Description of Buddha and Buddhism

This is the first Jack Kerouac book that I have ever read, so I am not a follower of his. However, I have read many books on Buddhism, and this is one of the best. It covers the story of Buddha's life and his enlightened teachings in concise, but rich language, much of which is attributed to direct quotes from the Buddha. So even though this book is from a "famous" writer, its value is the remarkable story of the Buddha and his beliefs, and the author's writing skill comes through, but not the writer's beliefs, which aids the clarity of the presentation.

A bonus here is the long introduction (22 pages) by noted American Buddhist scholar Robert Thurman. His writing is almost "a book within a book" and points out some key passages in the text, that then become more meaningful when you see them in the body of the book.

This book will be a treasure to any spiritual seeker.

Kerouac's Biography of the Buddha

In the early 1950s, Jack Kerouac (1922 -- 1969)became fascinated with Buddhism. In 1955, he wrote this short, highly personalized biography of the Buddha, "Wake Up". The biography was serialized in 1993 in the Buddhist magazine "Tricycle" but it has never before appeared in book form. The book was published to coincide with the 50th anniversary of Kerouac's most overtly Buddhist novel, "The Dharma Bums" which has also appeared in a new commemorative edition this year.

"Wake up" is a small gem. The writing is a passionate mixture of Kerouac and Buddhist texts. The book shows fervor and commitment and explains what Kerouac found valuable in Buddhism. The Buddha is treated as almost an Asian equivalent of Jesus. Kerouac never left the Catholicism in which he was raised. He was among the first of a long generation of Americans that have tried to combine the insights of the Buddha with a western religion.

For an American in the 1950s Kerouac had read widely if unsystematically in Buddhism. Thus this biography draws on texts from different Buddhist traditions which are not fully consistent with each other. In much of the book, Kerouac drew on a book called "The Buddhist Bible" in which an earlier American writer, Dwight Goddard, who likewise was attracted to both Buddhism and Christianity, translated some basic Buddhist texts. Kerouac had great problems with alcohol, drugs, and sex througout his life. As often is the case, the writer was wiser than the man. "Wake up" evidences an excellent lay understanding of the Buddhism which so inspired Kerouac. While this book is introductory, informal and nonscholarly, Kerouac had a sympathetic grasp of his subject.

Kerouac describes the purpose of his book at the outset: "I have designed this to be a handbook of the ancient Law. The purpose is to convert." But this, Kerouac meant to transform the reader by showing the life-changing character of Buddhist teachings.

Here is how Kerouac begins his biography.

"Buddha means the awakened one. Until recently most people thought of Buddha as a big fat rococo sitting figure with his belly out, laughing, as represented in millions of tourist trinkets and dime store statuettes here in the western world... This man was no slob-like figure of mirth , but a serious and tragic prophet, the Jesus Christ of India and almost all Asia." (p7) Kerouac describes how the Buddha grew disillusioned with his life of luxury, his dancing girls, and even his lovely wife when, at the age of 29, he was confronted with the facts of aging, sickness and death. He left the life of a prince and became a wanderer in search of understanding human suffering for the purpose of alleviating it.

Kerouac loosely follows the story of Buddha's life, focusing upon his Englightenment experience six years after his wandering began. The Englightenment is described in a mixture of Buddhist texts and Kerouac's inimitable prose. As Kerouac describes it in part:

"Ho there! Wake up! the river in your dream may seem pleasant, but below it is a lake with rapids and crocodiles, the river is evil desire, the lake is the sensual life, its waves are anger, its rapids are lust, and the crocodiles are the women-folk."(p44) Earlier, Kerouac quotes an "eminent writer" who said that in looking for the cause of human unhappiness Gotama had "sought for it in man and nature, and found it not, and lo! it was in his own heart!" (p.21)

Kerouac leads the reader through the Buddha's ministry, his disciples, and his teachings including the famous "fire sermon" with a focus on the difficult Buddhist teachings of dependent origination and emptiness, which he explains well. Near the end of the book, Kerouac offers a long metaphysical discussion of the nature of reality and emptiness based upon a text known as the Surangama Sutra, which Kerouac knew from the translation in Goddard. The book closes with a Sutra-based account of the Buddha's death in which Kerouac writes

"The moon paled, the river sobbed, a mental breeze bowed down the trees.".... Voluntarily enduring infinite trials through numberless ages and births, that he might deliver mankind and all life, foregoing the right to enter Nirvana and casting himself again and again into Sangsara's stream of life and destiny for the sole purpose of teaching the way of liberation from sorrow and suffering, this is Buddha who is everyone and everything." (pp 145-146)

The book features an introduction by the noted American Buddhist scholar Robert Thurman which discusses Kerouac's understanding of Buddhism as it appears in "Wake Up" and in "The Dharma Bums" and which explores Kerouac's understanding of the relationship between Buddhism and the Catholicism to which he was born.

SUPER ENLIGHTENING

ANOTHER "new" Kerouac book...denied publication until now...originally penned in the mid 1950's. Amazing. Make no mistake, this book is great great great and; as a source of enlightenment, unsurpassed. It's every bit as enlightening as his other Buddhist book, "Some of the Dharma," every bit as enlightening as selelcted poems from Mexico City Blues and many other poetry books as well. Kerouac's poetic abilities shine clear & bright as his special talent for expressing ecstatic dharma. Interestingly, I did not find this book in the Kerouac section in a big bookstore...they had it shelved in the Buddhism section! Just as well, I guess. This is no "minor" Kerouac book like, say, Pic or Satori in Paris. It is a treasure of meditative ecstasy. Jack Kerouac was the greatest writer who ever lived.

It's just my opinion, but this book wasn't ready to be published

There were a couple of really good things about this book and many not so good things. The premise of the story could have been something special. I'm all for the plus girl winning the hot guy, but I had some issues connecting to some of the characters. Reed, the male character, was not only hot, but an overall good guy. He had some great moments of self discovery and was written well. That's about where the good ended. The main female character, Becky, was someone I just couldn't connect to. As a plus sized woman, I understood the insecurities, but in this book, they bordered on the ridiculous. She came across as so passive and while she kept saying she was ambitious, her actions had everyone else doing the work to build her business for her. She could never come up with an idea for her business on her own and waited for everyone else to give her ideas. It frustrated me that she was trying to start a business, but had no idea how she was going to do that and seemed shocked at how challenging it was. As for the best friend, Samantha... ugh... is it possible to hate a fictional character? The author seemed to want her to be sassy and confident and tried to write her that way, but she just came across to me as bitchy and snide. There was a level of immaturity in the characters that I found off putting. I really wanted to like this book, but in addition to the character issues, there were some transition issues with POV. I had to re-read several passages to realize that the POV had changed from Becky to Reed or vice versa and there was a random POV passage from an ex-girlfriend that seemed completely out of place. Again, I really wanted to like this book, but even if I had been able to overlook some of what I'd previously written, the abruptness of the ending sealed the deal for me. It seemed as if the author may have just gotten tired of writing and said "how can I end this in one paragraph or less?" There was no closure and no resolution to anything explored in the book. I'm not sure if this was self published, but if so, I'd recommend the author get a better editor because this could have been a good story, it just needed so much more development. It wasn't ready.

This was such a mess, you'll end up actually angry at the author.

I have a rule never to post a bad book review, except when the author disrespects the reader. And that's precisely what this author did. She wrote something without polishing it, and without even proofreading it. I mean, come on...if you don't know the difference between "your" and "you're," you need a proofreader.

Idiotic misspellings ("all ready" instead of "already," and in enough places that it wasn't a typo), narrative point of view changes back and forth between all the characters, sometimes even sentence by sentence. Many sentences had missing words, and a lot of the dialogue didn't even make it clear who was speaking.

Every mistake jars the readers out of the world the author wants them to be in. This was a hot mess.

All of those problems would have been immediately caught by the most incompetent proofreader, so it's obvious Ms. Catori didn't even bother. She had no regard for her readers...I don't care if the book is 25 dollars or 99 cents, an author has an obligation to provide a book that's at least readable.

As for the story itself, it was sophomoric and boring. None of the characters were consistent enough to even seem real.

Don't waste your time. The title is the only good thing about this book.

I had high hopes for the story, it had started off okay then went down hill. The ending was abrupt and anticlimactic. There were a few funny parts that were very enjoyable, but the ending was horrible

C# has been around for awhile now, but popularity has only grown in the nearly 10 years it has been around. This book covers everything that makes C# such a great language to program in, making sure to highlight all the newest features and goodies that the newest release has to offer.

I wish the layout was a little more exciting to stand out a bit from other books on the shelf, but the approach used here gets the job done. If you are an experienced C# developer, the heart of the book lives in chapters 27-28. The developer learns how to put to use multi-core processors and get more done in their application faster than ever before. Threading used to be a difficult thing to do and control in the past. With Visual Studio 2010 this confusing act is covered well here so that C# apps written today can hit light speed and beyond!!

This is the one

I can't vouch for how good this book would be for a complete beginner. If, like me, you are already experienced in an another programming language then this is by far the best book to get for learning c# and the .Net 4 framework. I should know, I spent ages in a computer bookshop comparing all of the c# books on offer.

As of the date of this review (March 2011) the book is bang up to date with a good explanation of some of the latest Microsoft innovations such as WPF (Windows Presentation Framework) design and controls, XAML (eXtensible Application Markup Language). Both of these scary acronyms are easier to understand than they sound, partly because they are so well explained by the author.

I like the easy instructional style and well worked out examples. John Sharp does not waste words but spells out each programming/design principle with just enough text and more importantly, just enough example code for you to get the point.

I am a huge fan of the Head First series and was tempted to buy the Head First c# book. I had a look through some of the chapters of the Head First c# book and have to report that it is not up to the usual (very high) Head First standards.

The only puzzling thing about the author is that he is a Gillingham supporter. Why??? :-) Apart from that weirdness I recommend Step by Step very highly.

AMAZING SO FAR...

Well, i'm 7 chapters into this book and so far, it is amazing. It is amazing because all the examples work perfectly. Unlike other programming books that leave you stranded, this one is absolutely amazing. I've had to throw away other programming books because they were garbage, but this one will be used as a reference for a long time.
