By far my favorite of the series...
By Chauntell Britt
Where do I begin?? So many awesome things about this story!
Mary Chase: fierce warrior woman. I loved when Mary was introduced in the previous book(s), because she was the "ride or die" assistant that did not ask questions and did what she was told without hesitation, because she believed in the cause, and was taught early on that emotions had little place in the dark world they live in.
Jack Talent: cold-hearted assassin. When Jack was introduced, you are immediately drawn to his character, just because you know there's an amazing back story there and so many unexplored emotions. He is a very dark character, but has a huge heart and is fiercely loyal.
The interactions between Mary and Jack are the best! Very tense, very controlled and still somehow very deep. They hate each other... Not a petulant, pigtail-pulling, hate, but like a bone-deep hate. Their interactions with each other are completely intense and I find myself on the edge of my seat just waiting for the next one. I loved how their relationship developed. It was a slow build from enemies, to partners, to friends, then finally, FINALLY, lovers. And all the while there are constantly new dimensions to their relationship that are being peeled back and explored.
There was no rush with this story. Mrs. Callihan definitely took her time with these characters which is much appreciated. The plot is constantly engaging as they work on the case, getting deeper and adding more twists. The final resolution, and the revelations along the way, were amazingly well thought out. The running theme of trust, not only in each other but also in themselves, came to a head and panned out beautifully. Very good introduction of Holly and Will.
I could honestly go on for hours about this book. I just really loved and appreciated these characters, they are by far my favorite ever, and I knew it from the moment I met them. Mary gets to discover and show emotions that no one thinks she has, and find her self worth and confidence. Jack gets to do some healing, (and a lot of killing!) and gets to feel what its like to truly know that he is loved and worthy by family and friends, despite his past and current predicaments. They are both thought cold, but nothing could be further from the truth. This is a phenomenal series, and I can't wait to read more and more and more!

Dark and Brilliant Romance
By Farrah
Dark, romantic, and thrilling, Shadowdance was a fantastic steampunk romance. The creepy demons of mysterious murders had chills going down my spine, while the romance dark, sweet, and steamy. I really enjoyed reading this book.
Mary was a strong heroine. She wasn't the type to sit and wait around. She fought for what she believed in and what she wanted. She was tough, brave, clever, and likable. I thought she was great.
Jack was also amazing. He had one hell of a dark past, not the least of which was what he suffered at the hands of bloodthirsty demons. He quite understandably wanted revenge, but even with all that anger and bitterness, he wasn't corrupted. He was still a good, sweet man at heart, one who was determined to protect those he loved. I adored him. He was just wonderful.
The romance was great. Despite the years of animosity between these two, you didn't have to dig deep before their real feelings were revealed. I thought that is was so sweet how, despite everything they still loved each other. And, the chemistry between them was hot, from the moment they met (even though they refused to act on it until much later). There were certainly some hot scenes in store.
The plot was well paced. Though I was hooked for most of the way through, there were some points where things started to drag a bit. But, then the story would pick back up, so it wasn't a huge problem. There were tons of thrills that kept me on the edge of my seat, and some dark secrets that I never saw coming. I really enjoyed the story and I thought the ending was perfect.
Shadowdance was a brilliant steampunk romance. It was dark, romantic, and full of shocking secrets. I loved every bit of it. Lovers of romance, if you want a dark and lovely read, this is your book.

Wonderful paranormal romance - wonderful series
By Pamerd
4.5 Stars
Shadowdance has all the right ingredients for me to truly enjoy, the continuation of a wonderful series, historical setting, a bit of Steampunk, amazing sex scenes, mystery and danger. I have loved this series from the first book, Firelight and look forward to continuing the series to see what adventure is next for our Supernaturals.
Jack Talent is the enigmatic shifter who worked for Ian Ranulf at one time but now is a Regulator for the SOS, a Supernatural organization. He is investigating the mysterious deaths of several demons and to add to his troubles, Mary Chase is assigned as his new partner.
Mary is a GIM, Ghost in a Machine, a supernatural being that has been given a new life with a mechanical heart. GIM’s are some of the best spies in London as they can travel outside their bodies without detection. There are trust issues between the two, they have known each other for several years and Jack has always treated her with distain, she usually keeps her distance because she is unsure why he seems to hate her, until now.
As they delve deeper in the mystery of the murders and find more sinister beings, the two fight the attraction between them, Jack is so mean and nasty that Mary just wants to throttle him, but she knows what he is going through since she is the one that found him two years ago after demons tortured him and knows that his pain is so raw, she can hardly blame him. Things are about to disintegrate and they are both in the middle of the inferno.
All I can say is wow, as usual, this series is amazing. Ms. Callihan has outdone herself as we immerse ourselves in the historical world of a slightly different London. This world has special gadgets and interesting species that are both fascinating and terrifying. The beginning of the story is slow as we explore the world Ms. Callihan has created; she builds the tension between Jack and Mary as well as the danger of the serial killer and a possible imitator. The chemistry between Jack and Mary sizzles, as the love/hate relationship threatens to explode, taking everything in its path. The banter between them is witty and intellectual as the two are forced to work together even though they do not trust each other, they both hold on to many secrets. I love the tortured hero, and Jack is a true tortured soul that is done well.
The pace of the story picks up with the increased danger. We have unknown assailants, kidnapped scientist, gruesome demons in mechanical bodies and trust issues, what more do we need? The writing is well done as you imagine yourself walking down the streets of London and the portrayal of both Jack and Mary and the secondary characters is intriguing and ingenious. I love that many of those featured in previous books are here to help and we get to meet new and interesting people that will be in the next book.
Shadowdance is book four in the Darkest London series and since this is a different world, there is a lot of world building. I do believe you can read this as a standalone, the author revisits major developments that help with understanding, but the first three books are so good that I recommend reading them all. I am excited to see that the next book will feature Holly Evernight and her scientific mind, oh the adventures that will ensue.
