A satisfying presentation, albeit a little too politically correct

I enjoyed reading this fresh look at the early English colonists in Massachusetts, and learned a great deal in a detailed sense of what really happened, why, and the consequences, and all presented within a coherent historical timeline. Many questions or curiousities I had on this subject were answered for me, and in that respect I think that this book confined to this one brief area and period in American history will be useful to others also.

A problematic area for historians is the ethnic or racial angle of regarding early history here. The political tendencies or pressures seem to be to demonize white settlers whilst presenting the aboriginal inhabitants as peaceful, innocent, etc. Philbrick does fall into some of this unfortunately, but at the same time makes clear that both sides had their own interests and motivations. Some Indian tribes did befriend and assist the new English arrivals, but he makes clear that this was out of an interested desire to make use of them politically and militarily as a counterweight against other, larger Indian tribes nearby, i.e. that altruism or generosity was not a major determinant here.

Certainly the 'Thanksgiving' tradition is assigned to all this, I.e. within popular American cultural perception, but the author makes clear that things were far more complicated. I think that a relatively safe conclusion to draw overall, is that English settlers and Indians helped each other, learned and gained from each other, and that the conflicts that occurred with certainly no greater or more unusual, and probably far less so, that that between Indian tribes themselves. Depopulations and changing ownership of lands was a matter of desire on both sides, and often a result of epidemics - which by the way went both ways across the Atlantic and certainly were not genocidal in nature.

I recommend the book. It is not perfect of course, but it is a great page-turning read, and one very well written.
