About the Author
STEVEN MASLEY, MD is a Fellow with the American Heart Association, the American Academy of Family Physicians,and with the American College of Nutrition. He has devoted his medical career to the study of heart disease and aging, and has published significant research on these subjects in leading medical journals.
Currently he is the president of the Masley Optimal Health Center in St. Petersburg, Florida, and has a clinical appointment with the University of South Florida.
He is also an instructor of Lasting Leadership with Eckerd College, and has taught at the Center for Leadership with Sykes College of Business at the University of Tampa.

If you actually care about your health - read this book!

As an emergency physician I read this book with dismay, if too many of you take its advice, it will drastically decrease my income! In all seriousness, if you have been frustrated by all the diet / health advice books out there - look no further - this one truly puts it all together! Dr. Masley does a masterful job of explaining why most of us aren't really very healthy and then plots out a reasonable, entirely doable program to remedy that. Weaving in fascinating vignettes from his patients and family, he artfully explains the rapidly evolving science of staying healthy.
Most similar books advocate changes in diet so radical, that they are absurd and patently unrealistic - not this one! It explains in plenty of detail how to reasonably modify our diets in order to have marked effects on those diseases that rob us of our health and vitality. In addition to his dietary counsel, Dr. Masley wisely includes practical advice on how to exercise efficiently, de-stress our minds, and improve our sex lives.
Although I already consider myself pretty healthy and knowledgeable about the medical field, I was thrilled to learn so much more from this one book. It will definitely change not only my diet, but my approach to life!

Great book - who couldn’t love a doctor who is also a nutritionist and chef!

Great book and who couldn’t love a doctor who is also a nutritionist and chef. Some of the highlights for me:
• Why a little bit of stress is healthy and how important love and support is
• How romance and a cuddle raises oxytocin and lowers cortisol
• How we have disease-care and not health-care and why we must focus more on blood sugar than cholesterol
• For every woman who dies of breast cancer, 6 women die from heart disease
• His 4 tests for assessing risk for heart disease: (the four Fs to fantastic heart health): fitness, fiber, body fat and food/nutrients. His top advice is to be fit (he has a fitness test in his book) and eat 30g of fiber a day!
• The carotid IMT/ intimal medial thickness test (this was new to me!) and the advanced lipid profile
• How statins don’t help reduce the risk of heart disease in women and some of the side-effects. I was aware of muscle aches and memory loss but did not know that they lower testosterone levels and raise blood sugar
• The five new categories of food that will prevent and reverse heart disease: fiber, lean and clean protein, healthy fats, beneficial beverages and fantastic flavors. I love his last category – herbs, garlic, ginger, turmeric!
• The top two foods that cause heart disease: Refined carbs/sugar/flour and trans fat/partially hydrogenated oils. Not fat, and not cholesterol!
This book is important for me and my clients because of the link between anxiety and increased risk of heart disease. The wonderful thing is that by following the guidelines in this book, your heart will be healthy and you’ll likely start to feel less anxious! If you are super-sensitive to caffeine then just use common sense when it comes to Dr. Masley’s suggestions for dark chocolate, coffee and green tea.

I read the book and started the procedures recommended, proper foods

I've had 2 strokes and recovered very well. After testing I was found to have calcified plaque in my heart arteries as well as other forms of plaque. I read the book and started the procedures recommended, proper foods, exercise and supplements. After 4 weeks, I've lost 10 lbs and 2 inces from my waist. I am feeling much better and healthier now and am in the process of having my lab work completed to see if there are any positive results. I'm a tad over 70 and so far I am very impressed with the results of the studies in this book.
