About the Author
When she’s not writing, Christy Ogilvie works as a singer and vocal instructor. A passionate reader and observer, she felt called to fiction writing after many years producing poetry and wry vignettes. While building her reputation as a musician, she held down jobs as varied as executive assistant to a CEO, law office secretary, waitress and bartender, trade show and print advertising model, and private caterer, all of which provided fodder for plot lines and characters. If asked, she’ll tell you she cares about two things: literature and music. This is her first novel.

An intriguing, suspenseful time capsule of a family in 1930's Chicago

"That Kind Of Girl" is a story of a family (grandmother and two granddaughters) beset by tragedy and financial hardships. They move to Chicago to be with the girl's father, who, not being a responsible parent, had left them years ago. Their hopes of blending their lives together are quickly dashed in the realization that the father is not only still irresponsible, but infected with much darker moods and actions. The story is beautifully interwoven with narrative from many of the character's voices and perspectives. It paints a very clear picture of 1930's era Chicago, depicting contrasts between social classes, good folks and not so good folks, dreamers and dreams derailed. Christy Ogilvie reveals this story with striking descriptions of places and people, mystical happenings, and flashbacks that give insights into the character's natures. This is a novel about some very strong women dealing with difficult times and horrendous situations. TKOG is a beautifully written love letter to ladies who long ago stood their ground and became role models for generations of women to come.

A Midwest Gothic Tale

Mrs. Ogilvie brings us a family drama that is reminiscent of a classic southern gothic novel, even though the tale is set in Chicago. The tragedies that befall the characters in TKOG are disturbing and heart-wrenching, yet the sorrow and despair are balanced with examples of love, beauty and tremendous strength of character. The reader has the privilege of getting inside the head of many of the characters as the story is told in their own unique voices. This is an element that Ogilvie does exceedingly well as she captures the unique rhythm of speech and thought of each narrator. This book reads as a deeply personal story and one that is beautifully shared by a very promising literary voice.

Unspeakable acts in the past - a Book Group Choice

Prior to the 1990s, abuse and alcoholism were unspoken evils. No one received any kind of therapy for wounds -emotional or otherwise- inflicted during their childhood. THAT KIND OF GIRL has characters who have been hurt immensely. One handles it terribly and passes on what happened to him, with disastrous consequences. One survives, but sinks to the lowest rung of the social ladder. One thrives, despite her unspeakable experiences. Christy Ogilvie takes you on a raw and emotional journey in THAT KIND OF GIRL and will make you want to talk about things you may not have ever discussed before.
If you're in a book group, this would be a great choice.
I highly recommend THAT KIND OF GIRL.
