Alchemic-fiction (new word?)

Before science, there was alchemy. So before science-fiction, I think there must be alchemic-fiction. I'm rounding my rating up (more of a high 3 than a solid 4 giving Neal the benefit).

Prerequisite reading: you should read Neal's Cryptonomicon for characters. And Snowcrash for a little writing style.

Quicksilver (aka Merucry or element Hg) is a little integral part of the early development of modern science and a bit part of alchemy. Neal has written a little tale involving the early days of Isaac Newton, the Royal Society, and some other tales and historic figures as well as precursor descendents from the Crypt. Our characters roam around the new world having adventures. I won't spoil the details be don't take some of the description too seriously. Eliza is a 20th century woman faking her way through the 17th and 18th centuries. I won't get into Daniel and Jack, but it's noted that an awful smelling pirate has air freshers in the shape of a tree hanging in his capt's cabin, or a new phenomena in Venice between boat drivers called Canal rage.

Yes, it's a little slow in places, but I look forward to listening to my audio version for a 2nd reading/hearing. And moving on to The Confusion. I reserve further judgment until reading all 3 volumes. Added notes and comment on Goodreads.

A fascinating masterpiece of historical fiction in the time of Isaac Newton.

This is a great historical novel (Vol 1 of a set of 3, which comprise 8 "books" in total) with some mild science fictional/fantastic elements, which are worked into the plot in a sufficiently subtle manner that you very well might not notice unless you'd previously read the "post-quil" Cryptonomicon.This works deals with England, The Colonies, Europe, and to some degree the greater world in the time of Isaac Newton, The Reformation, Cavaliers and Roundheads, etc. It contains fascinating sections involving European politics in the time preceding the French Revolution, espionage,political intrigue on multiple levels, the development of modern science, piracy on the high seas, the industrial revolution, and an amazing panoply of characters from rogues to scientists, from courtesans to kings. The book is so well written and meticulously researched that at times it is difficult to separate the fictional elements from the the factual historical background, especially since a number of the major characters are real historical figures, such as Newton and his colleges in the Royal Society, as well as other luminaries of the early scientific movement.

Most fun read ( history and fiction ( dialogs between the real and imaginary peoples )) in sometime. I like that the author does mention that the characters do take notice that it generally stinks to be alive in the natural and organic ( no actual choice ) world, which many contemporary peoples do so "romanticize" the prior time periods. Ale/beer, plagues, bread, Microbiology rules!
